Lifting belt: how to choose the right one for the gym

The lifting belt (or powerlifting belt) is the accessory that lets you push heavier safely on the squat, the deadlift and the press. But it isn't for everything, all the time. Here's how to choose and use it right.

What is a lifting belt for?

Contrary to popular belief, a lifting belt doesn't passively "hold up" your back. It gives you a surface to push your stomach against: by bracing, you create intra-abdominal pressure that stabilizes your spine under load.

  • More core stability under heavy loads.
  • More potential force on compound movements.
  • A cue to keep a solid brace.

When (and when not) to wear it

The belt is for heavy sets of the big movements (squat, deadlift, overhead press, hip thrust). No need to wear it during warm-ups, on light sets or for isolation work.

Important: the belt doesn't replace a solid brace. Train your core unbelted first; the belt amplifies, it doesn't compensate.

The criteria to choose well

Width

Powerlifting belts are often 10 cm wide all the way around, for maximum stomach support. Models that taper at the front are more comfortable but offer less bracing surface.

Thickness

A stiff belt (thick leather) gives firm support for very heavy loads. A slightly more flexible belt is more versatile and comfortable for general training.

The fastening

  • Prong buckle: simple, reliable, notch adjustment.
  • Lever: very firm and quick to remove, but fixed setting.
  • Velcro: light and practical for training, less extreme for pure powerlifting.

What size lifting belt?

Size is based on your waist circumference at the navel (not your trouser size). Measure relaxed and refer to the size guide on the product page. Between two sizes, most people take the larger one for adjustment room.

How to use it correctly

  • Position it on the stomach, neither too high (ribs) nor too low (hips).
  • Cinch it firmly, while keeping room to push your stomach into it.
  • Breathe into the belly, push against the belt, then execute your rep.
  • Loosen between sets to let the blood flow.

FAQ

Does a lifting belt build your abs?

No. It helps you brace harder under load, but it doesn't replace core training and doesn't "shrink" your waist.

Beginner: do I need a belt?

Start by learning to brace without a belt. You can introduce it once you're handling heavy loads on the big movements.

Leather or nylon?

Thick leather offers the firmest support (powerlifting). Nylon/velcro is lighter and more versatile for general training.
